Event Equipment Hire Ltd has an annual turnover below the £36 million threshold at which a slavery and human trafficking statement is required under section 54 of the Modern Slavery Act 2015. We publish this statement voluntarily, because our customers are entitled to know how we deal with the risk and because we ask the same question of our own suppliers.
Our organisation
Event Equipment Hire Ltd (company number 13770775, registered office 2a Tenter Hill, Clayton, Bradford, West Yorkshire, BD14 6BD) designs, manufactures, maintains and hires out mobile grandstands, stages and LED screens to events across the United Kingdom. We deliver and deploy the equipment ourselves, using our own vehicles and our own crews. We do not operate outside the UK.
Our supply chains
Our supply chain is short and largely domestic. It consists mainly of:
- steel, aluminium, timber and fixings for manufacture and repair;
- LED panels, control systems, hydraulics and electrical components, some of which are manufactured overseas;
- vehicles, trailers, tyres, parts and fuel;
- occasional subcontract haulage and subcontract labour at peak times;
- workwear, personal protective equipment and consumables; and
- professional services, insurance and software.
Where the risk sits
We have assessed our own operations as low risk. Our crews are directly employed or engaged on terms we set, they are paid through our own payroll into their own named bank accounts, and they are known to us personally.
The risk that does exist sits further down the supply chain, and we are clear about where:
- Subcontract and agency labour taken on at short notice during the event season, which is the point at which checks are most likely to be rushed.
- Imported components and raw materials, particularly electronics, where we are several tiers removed from the point of manufacture.
- Low cost workwear, PPE and consumables, which are commonly produced in higher risk regions.
Our policies
We do not use, and will not knowingly permit anyone in our supply chain to use, forced labour, bonded labour, child labour or trafficked labour. Our approach is set out in this statement and supported by our Equality and Diversity Policy and by our terms of engagement with suppliers and subcontractors.
Due diligence and the steps we take
- We verify the right to work of everyone we take on, including agency and subcontract crew, before they work for us.
- We pay everyone directly into a bank account in their own name. We do not pay wages for several workers into a single account, and we do not pay a third party on a worker’s behalf. That single control removes the most common mechanism by which labour exploitation is hidden.
- We do not charge, and will not work with a labour provider who charges, any worker a fee to obtain work with us.
- We hold identity documents only as long as we need them and we check them against the person in front of us.
- We buy from established UK suppliers wherever we can, and we favour continuity of supply over chasing the lowest price on labour intensive goods.
- We expect our suppliers and subcontractors to apply the same standards to their own supply chains, and we reserve the right to end an arrangement where we are not satisfied.
Training and awareness
We are a small team and our directors are involved in hiring and in day to day operations. The people who take crew on know what to look for: a worker who cannot produce their own documents, a third party speaking for them, wages directed elsewhere, several workers sharing an address or a phone number, or someone who seems controlled by the person who brought them. Anyone who sees any of this is expected to raise it immediately with a director.
Measuring effectiveness
For an organisation of our size, headline key performance indicators would be dressing. We measure this the way it actually works in practice: every worker engaged during the year had their right to work verified before starting, every payment went to an account in the worker’s own name, and no concern was raised with the directors during the year. Those three things are checked at the year end, and any exception is recorded and investigated.
